, libya. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed in that attack. democrats say this new investigation is a ploy to embarrass the white house before november elections, but republicans say the administration just hasn't told the truth. nancy cordes reports. >> reporter: for nearly 20 months, four separate committees in the republican-led house have held dozens of hearings, examined documents, and released reports on the benghazi attacks, but house speaker john boehner said today a special new committee is needed because the obama administration is "intent on obstructing the truth about benghazi," and "willing to defy subpoenas." boehner had long argued a special committee was unnecessary, but aides say he unnecessary, but aides say he changed his mind this week after the white house released previously unseen e-mails in response to a lawsuit. one of the e-mails was sent three days after the libyan attack. deputy national security adviser ben rhodes wrote in public appearances u.n. ambassador susan rice should underscore these protests are rooted in an internet vi

, on what happened over in libya, in benghazi on that night where four brave americans died. well, now we know that there was a coverup as well because they had redacted, they crossed out all the stuff. then finally we got to see it. yesterday the white house press corps had it up to here. they realized they had been lied to for over a year and it even came down to where jay carney, who apparently is not paid enough because he tries to do a good job for the administration, he said that the benghazi memo that they prepared for susan rice before she went out on the sundayç shows, it wasn't about benghazi, even though at the top of it it said "benghazi." here's jonathan carl. >> you knew full well what susan rice primarily was going to be asked about was the attack, terrorist attack on a u.s. consolate. ambassador rice went on those shows and said the attack in benghazi was rooted in protests over an internet video. we now know that was not true. >> i would point you to what mike morrell said repeatedly in testimony about the?x(áqpáion of the talking points. >> morrell said last month, w

. this is three days after 9/11 when four americans, including the american ambassador to libya, are killed. everybody in the chain has said it's a terrorist attack, everyone in the chain is saying there's no protest. and yet this e-mail, if we're to believe jay carney at the white house, had nothing to do with benghazi. it was more about the broad scope of the region. now, imagine that. what are they going to ask about on five sunday talk shows when you have four americans who were killed just days before? they're not going to ask about the other protests that didn't see any americans killed. they're going to ask about that. so then he said that the reason they didn't originally put forward this e-mail to the committee -- they eventually got it to the committee redacted -- was because it didn't deal with benghazi. now, that really strains k-- ab did tremendous reporting on this -- >> we're going to -- we're preparing that right now. this is all breaking at the moment. we're going to have that in a minute, bret. but i want to just go back for a moment and talk about how this e-mail actually

president obama's image following the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya. the e-mails were obtained by the conservative watchdog group judicial watch. one was sent by white house communications adviser ben rhodes who is the brother of cbs news s president david rhodes. it lists one goal as, quote, to underscore that these protests are rooted in an inter234ed video and not a broader failure of policy. four americans were killed in the attack by militants on the u.s. consulate including ambassador christopher stevens. initially they linked the attack to the reaction to an anti-islam video rather than an islam militant. the white house said it was just stating the facts known at the time. the white house claims these e-mails are the smoking gun that shows the administration was trying to shield the president during the 2012 election. and you can see more on the benghazi e-mails coming up on "cbs this morning." >>> now, the state of oklahoma is investigating a bon. execution. oklahoma was using a new drug combination to execute clayton lockett. after ten minutes prison official
